Rewind to the fall of 2024, when I had to make a very difficult decision to cut Mike out of my life because of his dependency on alcohol.
Addiction – no matter the substance – is a very real problem in our world. It doesn’t discriminate and affects every gender and age, every race and orientation.
Life is hard, and not everyone can cope with the challenges we are handed. Some people turn to drugs or alcohol, while others fall into destructive patterns involving gambling, food, sex, shopping, or self-harm. I, myself, have my own demons and understand all too well the dangers of addiction…and that’s why I knew I had to cut Mike loose to heal on his own. Sometimes the ‘tough love’ option is the only way to go.
Forging new relationships is never easy. We have preconceived notions of who people are and expectations of where they should be by a certain point in their life. Not all of us are on the same timeline. Not all of us have the same goals. I would encourage you to look deeper into every person you meet (online or in person) and try not to judge a book by it’s cover. Some of us have been hurt, are broken, and have yet to fully heal. Some of us are on our own journey of self-discovery. Others are ready and willing to find love.
My advice today; remember that everyone is fighting a battle of some kind. Patience is a virtue…and kindness is free.
