I have been back feeling things out on a few dating apps for almost six months now. There are some popular trends I’ve noted, and I think they are why people are starting to dismiss the notion of finding love online. Use of dating apps has decreased 3-5% since Covid…and these trends might be part of the reason.
1. Ghosting – ignoring someone with no explanation. It’s the cowardly way out and used by people who don’t have the communication skills required to have a successful relationship in the first place. Be glad they’re gone!
2. Outsourcing – people are having friends create/monitor their accounts because they ‘trust their judgment’. It’s very impersonal and a start on the wrong foot!
3. Kittenfishing – like ‘catfishing’…but in the flesh. So, you meet someone for a date and they inflate their status by faking or exaggerating certain info.
4. Breadcrumbing – people giving the bare minimum so that you keep holding on to scraps hoping for more. This is a red flag…you might as well run early!
5. Cookie Jarring – this is when people ‘hedge their bets’ and have a line of potential dates in queue. Typically, this is someone who looks for the next best thing and isn’t interested in commitment. Unless you are happy being an option, let them enjoy a different cookie!
While I know that some people don’t take online dating seriously, there are a few good ones left still searching for a real connection. My advice today – don’t let a few bad apples ruin it for everyone. Believe me – your person is out there waiting.
