Why battle the cold and the wind in the fall? Fish get ready for winter too. Like the rest of us, fish are preparing for the winter months. This means its a great time to encounter heavily concentrated schools of aggressive fish. Personally i enjoy being on the water sun up to sun down but, if you want to be efficient with your time spent hunting down hungry packs of fish then early afternoon until evening would typically be the most productive. There are many variables that could change this approach depending on species of fish and particular bodies of water but to keep things simple we will go with that. If you are fishing for apex critters like pike and muskie just look for the steep breaks and try to find schools of baitfish, they will be lurking close by. If you are fishing for walleye, stick to the outside weed edges adjacent to the first main break line, usually in the 5 to 10 foot zone. Bass can get a little trickier. They can be up in the shallows feeding or in the depths roaming contour lines, rock piles, or submerged brush piles and vegetation. So don’t miss out on the biggest fish of the season, dress warm and extend the open water season, it’s nice to shorten that window between putting the boat away and getting on the ice.
