Hey everyone, I’m going to use this issue to pass on some important MNR regulations that have come into effect this season in our Zone 10 area. I consider these changes to be rather significant considering they have been the same for decades. So to help with the transition and help you avoid fines and get on board with the increased effort to preserve our fishery for the future. First big change is walleye. New regulations state 4 walleye for a sport license and 2 walleye for a conservation license all of which must be under 18.1″ long. Previously we were aloud 1 over 46cm (18.1″) . Now on to Northern Pike. With a sport license you may keep 6 pike. Only 1 greater than 61cm (24″) but less than 86cm (33.8″) and the other 5 must be under 61cm (24″). With a conservation license you may only keep 2 pike and both must be under 61cm (24″). Another change is to the Bass category. The MNR increased the limit to 6 Bass any size, up from the previous 5 with a sport license. 3 Bass any size may be harvested with a conservation license. I would recommend staying away from harvesting bass based on there growth pattern and toxins that accumulate over time. Out of the 3 categories the northern pike is generally the safest to eat under these size restrictions and the most environmentally responsible to harvest considering they grow very fast to these smaller sizes and reproduce quickly and efficiently. Walleye under the new regulations is also a good choice. Hopefully that will help clarify the new changes as some find it difficult dissecting the book of regulations. Fish Cowboyz out!
