In this issue we are going to talk about ice fishing rod science and set-up. Rod length and action are obviously very importantJeremy standing on a frozen lake, dressed warm and holding a good sized pike that he just caught.. A longer rod allows for more consistent pressure on the fish when in fight mode and the action determines how efficient you can present your bait of choice and how much pressure is applied to the fish during the fight. Generally the lighter the tackle the lighter the action rod you will use and vice versa. A tiny hook and too heavy of a rod will ultimately pull the hook out of the fishes mouth or bend the hook and lose the fish. If the rod is too light you will not have enough pressure left in the rod blank to maintain a gentle consistent pressure to keep the hook pinned and put excessive pressure on the line and cause line breakage since there is no rod blank support left to share the pressure applied from the fish. The general rule is the heavier the line, the heavier the bait and the bigger the target species the heavier the action and longer the rod you will need.
